Least Restrictive Environment Flowchart

Services for eligible students in special education should always consider placement in the least restrictive environment (LRE) where they are able to make educational progress. This means that students with disabilities are educated to the maximum extent appropriate with students who are not disabled. Special classes, schooling, or other removal of students with disabilities from the regular education environment occurs only if the nature and severity of the disability are such that education in the regular classes cannot be achieved satisfactorily.

The following are possible placement options:
*General Education with no Special Education services
* General Education with Consultative services
* General Education with Supportive Instruction
* General Education with Collaboration
* General Education with Co-teaching
* Resource classes
* Self-contained classes
* Futures Program
* Alternative schools
* Hospital/homebound
* Homebase
* Community based
