Making the call about whether to have school, to not have it, or to delay the opening for an hour or so is one decision that we will never take lightly. If at all possible, the decision will be made by 5:30 a.m. which will allow our buses to run and get the children to school on time. An announcement will be made on radio station WCON (99.3 FM). If school is cancelled, additional information will be provided to the Atlanta television stations and WNEG Channel 32. Information about school closings/openings will also be included on the system website which can be accessed at www.habershamschools.com and on the website for The Northeast Georgian.
During the winter season, when snow, sleet, freezing rain or a combination of them are possible, we all need to remember to take our time, drive safely, and arrive at our destination in good condition. As always the goal for our schools in Habersham County is to make sure that we provide safe schools where children are engaged in challenging work and where they travel to and from safely. That goal applies to every child in our system. Safety is the top priority for all of us.
In all situations, please encourage the students at your home to allow themselves enough driving time so that they can arrive at their school destination safely. Watch for “black ice” on bridges and roads. Seatbelts and good judgment will be critical. We need to remind our young drivers and our adults that it will take a few extra minutes to arrive safely in cases like this, so leaving early and buckling up need to be ground rules. Being on time is of utmost importance, but being there is more important. Parents, please help us by emphasizing road safety at home.
