Attendance
Regular attendance is an important factor in determining a student’s success in school. Frequent absences can cause students to miss important classroom instruction, fall behind in class work and earn lower grades. This can lead to stress, frustration and a negative attitude toward school. Parents should make sure their child attends school regularly. Parents are also encouraged to make sure the student is at school on time and allow him or her to complete the entire day.
If parents or guardians experience problems in getting their children to attend school regularly, they should be in contact with school staff members, including the guidance counselor or school social worker. All are willing to work with the family to help the child attend school regularly. Please click on the information above to see attendance and tardy procedures, an excused absences list, consequences of excessive absences, attendance requirements for a driver’s permit and license and an educational trip application. Questions about attendance should be addressed to Kathleen Clement, Habersham County School Social Worker, 754-2118, extension 18.

School nurses serve multiple schools. We appreciate your patience and understanding when you feel your school is in need and they are not present.
School Counselors are available at each school in Habersham County to provide guidance services, individual and group counseling, and consultation with school staff, parents, and the community. At each grade level, counselors provide classroom guidance to address developmental, transitional and educational needs common to all students. A counselor may also plan lessons with the individual classroom teacher to address a particular issue for a given class. Even though school counselors are not considered therapists, they provide individual and group counseling to assist students with problems that affect their performance in school. Information shared with the counselor is confidential unless disclosure is required to prevent clear and imminent danger to the student or others or when legal requirements demand that confidential information be revealed. At each school, the counselor welcomes parents and staff members to discuss services that might be helpful to assist students in personal, academic, career, or transitional needs. Below is a list of the counselors and information on how to contact them.

The Habersham County Mentoring Program is the pairing of a caring adult with a young person to provide friendship, counsel and a positive role model. It is currently the largest volunteer force in Habersham County with over 260 Mentors and Mentees participating in the program. Each mentor is a trained volunteer who serves as a good listener and nonjudgmental friend to a student who can benefit from this special, individualized relationship. The Mentor meets weekly with the mentee at school on a one to one basis to share information and life experiences. The Mentor helps the young person broaden his/her vision of opportunities and understand the value of education.
If you are interested in becoming a mentor, call 706-778-7978 and ask for the mentoring coordinator. A time will be set up that is convenient for you to meet for a brief training. At the time of the training, you will be asked to complete an application and permission form for a police screening. After acceptance, you will be assigned a mentee for one school calendar year. You will be asked to visit the mentee one hour a week at the child’s school.
If you are a parent or guardian and would like your child to have a mentor, please contact your child’s school counselor and let them know. Parents are required to sign a permission form for their child to participate in this program annually.

The Need to Talk program of Prevent Child Abuse Habersham is offered to students in the 5th- 9th grades. Students are informed in the schools that they can call an anonymous, confidential toll free helpline whenever they would like to talk to someone. They can discuss problems with friends, family issues, school problems, bullying, dating issues, violence and substance abuse issues to name a few. A trained employee with Prevent Child Abuse Georgia is available from 8am to 8pm to talk to youth. We hope this program will encourage students to talk to someone about their problems, to learn problem solving skills and to learn it is okay to ask for help. The Need to Talk staff will ask the caller to identify the county they are from and then twice a year they will give Prevent Child Abuse Habersham feedback as to what issues the youth who call are dealing with. Please contact Kathleen Clement, School Social Worker with questions at (706)754-2118 ext. 18
