The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 will bring some changes to your child's daily lunch experience. Here are some of the changes that will be effective this school year:
1. Only lowfat or nonfat milk will be available this school year. We will offer 1% plain milk and plain skim milk. Flavored skim milk will also be available.
2. Potable (drinking) water must be available to all students during the lunch meal where lunch is served by water fountains or through providing pitchers of water. School nutrition will provide pitchers of water with cups in those schools where there is not a water fountain located in the cafeteria.
3. Increase in lunch prices. Elementary: Breakfast - .85, Lunch- $1.20, MS/HS: Breakfast - $1.00, Lunch- $1.45, Visitor: Breakfast - $1.75, Lunch- $3.00, Staff: Breakfast - $1.50, Lunch - $2.75
4. USDA has updated our meal pattern to meet the current Dietary Guidelines for Americans. Your child will see some changes in their lunch choices next year. There will be more variety in fruit and vegetables, less breaded meat items, more whole grains and changes in calorie ranges for different age groups. Habersham County was already meeting many of the requirements put in place by USDA for the SY13.
5. There will be a charge policy in place for the SY13. All students will be limited to 5 days of meal charges. Parents will be notified by a weekly letter, daily note or phone call of their child's charges. After the 5th day of unpaid charges, the student will receive a courtesy meal that will consist of a cheese sandwich and fruit, water is available to all students in the cafeteria.
We will continue to keep you up to date on further changes. As always, thank you for your continued support!
