The dedication ceremony for the new Hilliard A. Wilbanks Middle School was held on August 13th, 2011. State Senator Jim Butterworth and State Representative Rick Austin and many veterans of our armed forces attended the event. Family members of Captain Hilliard A. Wilbanks were on hand to celebrate the occasion. The school's namesake, Hilliard A. Wilbanks, fought in three major wars and was a Medal of Honor Recipient. After the opening held at the football stadium that included planes flying over head, everyone moved into the gymnasium for the unveiling of the Patriot Mural. A self guided tour of the new school wrapped up the festivities where guests were allowed to meet the artist Nat Davis who constructed the 01-Bird Dog airplane model hanging in the atrium. Videos about the life and history of Captain Hilliard A. Wilbanks were shown in several rooms of the building. Students were able to pick up a free Wilbanks T-shirt complements of HEMC. Air support from Ft. Benning also attended the event. There were also several museum type rooms set up in the building displaying patriotism from past to present. There was much to see and enjoy at the dedication ceremony!
